West Hollywood City Council to Consider WeHo Target Vision Zero Speed Limit Reductions
A recent state law, known as AB 43, went into effect on June 30, 2024, and allowed for increased flexibility for local jurisdictions to set more context-appropriate speed limits. Proposed speed limit reductions represent a modest 5 mph reduction to the existing posted speed limit on the highest-speed roads in the City and exceptionally narrow residential streets. In most cases, speed limits that are currently 35 mph (the highest in the City) are proposed to be lowered to 30 mph, speed limits on four corridors that are currently 30 mph are proposed to be lowered to 25 mph, and speed limits on all local streets narrower than 25’ wide are proposed to be lowered to 20 mph. While improving traffic safety and reducing the number of deaths and injuries on the City’s roadways will require far more than speed limit reductions, speed remains a significant factor in crashes citywide. For example, speeding was involved in 11.7% of fatal and severe crashes in West Hollywood from 2018-2022. A detailed staff report with more details on the methodology, background, local context, and legal basis for proposed speed limit reductions as part of the larger City Council agenda at least 72 hours prior to the City Council meeting.
